With a trumpet and drum duet it is quite easy to tell which is which. But if the duet is an oboe, and a bassoon, or worse yet, a viola and a violin, it is impossible to tell where one stops and another starts. So it is with works of art. Sometimes what you see is perfectly obvious and at other times, the material, the titles, and even the shapes and the colors are entirely obscure.
This is how it is with the paintings of Patricia Hogan and Mary Ann Yarmosky. Yarmosky paints on canvas with acrylic paint and Hogan paints her paintings with encaustic. Acrylic is obvious but encaustic is obscure. When Yarmosky puts down some red, it is red, but with Hogan the red might be shading it’s way into mauve or to a shaded rose tint.
And so it is with titles. Compare “A Checkered Past” and “Thanks Claude” to “Two Girls and a Cat.”
